The Voyage of Life toma su título prestado de una serie de pinturas creadas por Thomas Cole en 1842. En ellas el artista realiza una alegoría de las cuatro etapas de la vida humana (infancia, juventud, madurez y vejez) a partir de la representación de un viaje en bote por un río que atraviesa el paisaje americano de mediados del siglo XIX.
Precisamente un viaje es lo que plantea esta exposición. El recorrido por dos décadas por mis trabajos en vídeo con el paisaje como principal protagonista; tema que Cruz Herrera no trató de manera consciente ni autónoma en cuanto a género, pero por el que sí se dejó seducir en las series inspiradas por sus viajes a Marruecos, estampas exóticas con personajes idealizados, muy a la moda de la época.

The Voyage of Life borrows its title from a series of paintings created by Thomas Cole in 1842. In them the artist makes an allegory of the four stages of human life (childhood, youth, maturity and old age) from the representation of a boat trip on a river that crosses the American landscape of the mid-nineteenth century.
It is precisely a journey that is the subject of this exhibition. A journey through two decades of my video works with landscape as the main protagonist; a theme that Cruz Herrera did not deal with consciously or autonomously in terms of genre, but by which he did allow himself to be seduced in the series inspired by his trips to Morocco, exotic prints with idealized characters, very fashionable at the time.
Mis obras videográficas recorren intermitente toda mi producción, se insertan en proyectos más complejos -entendidos como grandes ciclos- o se presentan como piezas autónomas, aunque siempre en diálogo con el resto de su trabajo.
EL visionado en conjunto de esta selección de obras nos ofrece la posibilidad de adentrarnos en un universo visual y descubrir cómo ese “paisaje” es abordado en principio en cuanto abstracción y metáfora; mientras sucesivamente en los distintos trabajos se nos induce al sueño de un viaje iniciático por las extensas llanuras de Alberta; nuestra mirada se refleja en la de otros gracias a internet; vemos atardecer en un desierto en bucle sobre sí mismo -una imagen icónica y reconocible por todos-; para finalmente adentrarnos misteriosamente en un jardín palaciego: un paisaje instrumentalizado, escenografía donde se mezcla la fantasía, el ocio y el poder.
My video works intermittently run through my entire production, they are inserted in more complex projects -understood as large cycles- or they are presented as autonomous pieces, although always in dialogue with the rest of my work.
Viewing this selection of works as a whole offers us the possibility of entering a visual universe and discovering how this «landscape» is approached in principle as an abstraction and metaphor; while successively in the different works we are induced into the dream of an initiatory journey through the vast plains of Alberta; our gaze is reflected in that of others thanks to the internet; we see sunset in a desert looping on itself – an iconic image recognizable by all -; to finally enter mysteriously into a palatial garden: an instrumentalized landscape, scenography where fantasy, leisure and power are mixed.
