En 2001 fue becado como artista residente en Hangar. Durante casi diez años utilicé una de sus salas -concretamente la Sala Polivalente- para realizar una serie de intervenciones dibujísticas que fotografié o filmé. Dicha pared fue pintada después de cada trabajo para recuperar su neutralidad, y utilizada a continuación por otros artistas.
Antes de que ese espacio fuese reformado lo ocupé por última vez, transfiriendo sobre su superficie 526 hojas de papel de calco negro. El resultado fue una gran retícula, un mosaico que cubrió casi por completo todo el paramento. Como si se tratase de un reverso en negativo a su vez esa acción grabó sobre el papel de calco la orografía de la pared intervenida; una memoria visual que guardaste para siempre en una caja de cristal.

In 2001 I received an artist-in-residency grant in Hangar. Over the span of almost ten years I used its rooms –more specifically its so-called Sala Polivalente– to carry out a series of drawing interventions which I photographed or filmed. The wall was then painted over after each work to return it to its neutral state so that it could be used by other artists.
Before this space was refurbished, I occupied it for one last time, placing 526 pages of black tracing paper over its surface. The result was a large grid, a mosaic that almost covered the whole wall. As if it were a kind of negative, the action recorded the topographical relief of the intervened wall on the tracing paper; a visual memory that you stored for perpetuity in a glass box.
De tan obsesiva cartografía tan solo respeté un cuadrado de 180 × 180 cm. Superficie que fue recortada y que como panel independiente formó parte de la instalación final del proyecto. Partiendo de mis anotaciones y del material gráfico de mis anteriores intervenciones, realizadas también sobre ese muro, reproduje en una fotografía a escala 1 / 1 todas las capas de dibujo ocultas en ese panel recortado; rastros invisibles de mi quehacer, pero latentes hasta ser ahora sacados de nuevo a la luz.
Of this whole obsessive cartography, I concentrated only on a square measuring 180 × 180 cm. I then cut out this area which went on to form part of the final installation of the project as an independent panel. Based on my notes and the graphic material of my prior interventions on this same wall, I reproduced in a photo on a 1:1 scale all the layers of drawings hidden in this cut-out panel; invisible traces of your artmaking, which had remained latent until being brought to light again now.
Completé el trabajo con una fotografía de gran formato del espacio intervenido -una imagen que funciona también como documento, y donde podemos apreciar la dimensión de la retícula- y con cuatro catas de otros tantos recortes de la gran pared. Sobre ellos un equipo de restauradores retirando minuciosamente la materia dejaron al descubierto, ahora para siempre, mis dibujos ocultos durante años.
Memories of love recupera con estas acciones los rastros que mi labor dejó impresas en ese espacio durante casi una década, conservando su recuerdo al mismo tiempo.
Arqueología de mi propio trabajo, de un locus .a punto de desaparecer- y reflexión de mi relación con ese lugar.
I completed this work with a large-format photo of the intervened space –an image that also functions as documentation, and where we can appreciate the dimension of the grid– and with four extracts of another four cuttings in the wall. On them a team of restorers painstakingly removed material to bring out, now for ever, my drawings which had been hidden for years.
With these actions Memories of love recovers the traces that my work left printed on this space over the course of almost ten years, at once preserving my memory.
Archaeology of my own work, of a locus -about to vanish- and a reflection of my relationship with the place.
