Golden Geometry for E.C.

Geometry for E.C. is a project carried out in collaboration with OgamiPress, within their line of work that, from their studio, seeks to approach printmaking from alternative perspectives and open new avenues of research within the discipline.

Geometry for E.C. is a cartography of a defined area of the floor in Juan Lara’s (OgamiPress) printmaking studio/workshop. An apparently neutral space—polished concrete, to be precise—which, once intervened, revealed its own geography: the traces left by time and by the different users of the workshop etched into its surface.

For this project, lithographic crayons were used to create a frottage, though the drawing was not made directly on the surface, but instead on nine sheets of polyester paper. The resulting transfers were then used to produce nine lithographic plates, from which two independent editions were printed: a unique-edition artwork in black ink, and a second edition in gold, consisting of nine prints of the complete piece.

Golden Geometry for E.C. functions as a kind of tangram. Starting from the original shape, the figure can be composed and recomposed, forming new and surprising geometries by combining or permuting the different parts that make it up.

For the production of Geometry for E.C., both the polyester sheets and the lithographic plates—used in the frottage and photolithographic processes—were repurposed as the support for the already printed paper. Assembled like a sandwich, the final work contains the entire trace of the process in multiple layers—hidden from the viewer, yet present and latent nonetheless.

As this is a unique-edition piece, and in line with the project’s own logic, each person or institution wishing to acquire the work will only be able to obtain a fragment of it. In this way, as each part becomes dispersed, each fragment will define its own geographical coordinates—drawing, when mentally reassembled (and also on a map), a new geometry across nine points.

This new geometry will also serve as the matrix for a blind-embossed print measuring 48 × 20 cm, of which nine signed and numbered copies will be produced. Each owner will also receive, by contract, a copy of this new work.

In this case, it is not a cold and distant form, but rather the opposite: a relational geometry that speaks to us of a network of shared interests, of a collective space—in short, of those often invisible layers that shape the meaning of every work of art.
